Practical work materials

ECTS: 4
Department:
MP
Degree level: 2nd year of Bachelor
Hours: 21.5h/student
Instructors: Christophe HUBERT

Learning objectives

  • These 6 practical classes in materials focus on the structure and properties of materials, as well as their characterization.

Course topics

There are six practical sessions, each covering the following themes:

  1. Structural characterization of materials using X-ray diffraction.
  2. Thin film evaporation through thermal evaporation.
  3. Characterization of mechanical properties using mechanical traction tests.
  4. Microstructural and elemental characterization using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray probing.
  5. Characterization of mechanical properties using the Vickers hardness test.
  6. Thermal analysis of polymers via differential scanning calorimetry.

Teaching method

  • Practicals. Students work in pairs. The teacher supervises the session, helps and answers students' questions.

Assessment

  • The student is assessed in a theoretical way through a 45’ test during which questions on the 6 practicals are asked.

Entry requirements

  • Courses, tutorials and lab work in materials taught in first and second year.
